Mr. Burns is originally from Ireland where he obtained the first of his two law degrees. Mr. Burns received his law degree in the United States from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, California and was graduate speaker for his graduating class. He currently serves on the Board of the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association and his most recent trial resulted in a verdict of $1.4 million dollars in a medical malpractice action against the County of Los Angeles. Mr. Burns was also co-counsel on a personal injury case, which resulted in the largest verdict in Southern California involving the loss of a spleen. Other significant verdicts and settlements include a $400,000 settlement for a young girl who was hit by a bat at a company picnic, a $225,000 settlement for a woman who slipped and fell on a grape in a grocery store and a $150,000 verdict for a man who partially severed two fingers on an unguarded table saw.
Mr. Burns is experienced in handling cases involving medical negligence and failure to treat as well as all types of personal injury, including but not limited to, automobile and pedestrian accidents, slip and fall accidents, victims of criminal attacks on commercial premises, product design and defect cases and dog-bite cases. His experience in trial and arbitrations makes him a capable advocate who has also successfully litigated insurance bad faith matters and business and commercial disputes as well as breach of contract claims and criminal defense matters.
He is a frequent writer and lecturer and has written on subjects including entitlement to Medical Payments for Injured Patrons, How to Prosecute a Third-Party Criminal Attack Case and the validity of releases. Mr. Burns was the managing attorney for one of the largest personal injury firms in Southern California and has extensive experience in representing clients and obtaining significant results for them. His expertise includes advising clients on how to obtain the best medical treatment and he takes pride in monitoring every case closely so that clients not only obtain a satisfactory result but are aware of the process and what is going on with their case on a constant basis.
