Hackensack-Based Investigative Firm Helps Tighten Employee Background Checks During Difficult Times
With Over A Decade Of Experience, Steven Sarao Proves To Be
A Calm, Cool Collector Of Vital Information
Hackensack, NJ; October 17, 2001 – In these new and uncertain times, company security is at an all time high throughout the country. All types of security check points and screenings are becoming commonplace. Thus, Steven Sarao, Managing Director of Sarao & Associates, is working over-time to keep up with the pace. “We have been getting a number of inquiries, but our focus is on our core client business, both here and abroad.
When asked if he carries a gun while working, Sarao calmly responds: “We don’t comment on any security procedures or techniques with regard to any work activities regarding the firm or the activities involved in representing our clients.”
Then, in keeping with the best investigative journalistic tactics, our question was rephrased: “Mr. Sarao, have you ever had to use a gun during work?”
Without even budging and an emotionless expression, Sarao merely repeated his original answer. It is exactly this calm, stress-free, and straight-from-the-hip demeanor that clients expect and get from Sarao, whose private investigations firmed has been retained to assist international companies in a variety of activities such as background checks, executive protection, surveillance, and competitive intelligence since 1989. While the firm’s corporate headquarters are located in Hackensack, the firm also has offices in New York City, Atlantic City, and Denver, Colorado, as well as affiliate offices located domestically in eleven additional markets. The firm has also set up international affiliate offices in Tel Aviv, Sao Paolo, Milan and Hong Kong. Our affiliate offices are smaller operations, and are normally independent and experienced personnel that Sarao has worked with before. A majority of our research is based upon relationships and networks and having individuals in other parts of the United States as well as internationally, with a prior intelligence background is a key component to our success.
In speaking face-to-face with Sarao, one gets the sense that he has been cross-examined over and over again by the best attorneys in the industry, and his extensive trial experience shows in the way he handles a routine interview. During the last decade, many have become inclined to think that the advent of the Internet has placed coveted and secure information out there for the taking, but Sarao’s thoughts on this issue are different. “It is certainly a fact that the Internet has increased the availability of information across the board. However, In today’s marketplace”, he explains, “we can also go into Home Depot to buy everything we need to build our own house, but the vast
majority of us would never contemplate doing that - we leave it to a professional…I have a better chance of getting hit in the head with a 4 x 6 then finding exactly what I need and correctly installing it.”
According to Sarao, background research is the same way. The information is out there, “but you need to know where to get it and how reliable it is, that’s where professionalism and our particular skill set comes in…Unfortunately, you can’t replace experience with a few strokes on your home computer,” he concludes.
Sarao & Associates mainly handles work for large multinational corporations, law firms, and throughout the insurance claims industry. The firm has handled personal matters in the past, mainly for foreign dignitaries and CEO’s of larger corporations, but budget has becomes a big part of the equation for many individuals in need of his services. Sarao explains that, despite ideas to the contrary, “Information is available to the consumer, if legally obtained…But it isn’t instantaneous, the way most of us are often led to believe. To obtain even public information there are hoops to jump through, and the more specific you get the higher the stakes.” In addition, public information is not the critical information that employers look for in screening potential candidates. Moreover, the critical information often desired is not openly available without contracting with a reputable and licensed investigative firm. Certainly, adds Sarao, there are large information companies that provide such services, but “in reality, you are purchasing information from a company that purchases information…When did they buy it last?…Has it changed since?…Our clients require up-to-date information that is reliable and researched by professionals. Clients weight budgetary restraints against the risk issue at hand, and if they are faced with a million-dollar lawsuit or a substantial security threat, they prefer not to cut corners to save a hundred dollars.”
With employee hires, even the most basic entry-level employee can create tremendous damage to a company if a past criminal record or other negative finding remains uncovered. Sarao & Associates boast proven expertise in preventing such matters. Additionally, the FCRA (Federal Credit Reporting Act), FTC (Federal Trade Commission) as well as other regulatory agencies have set guidelines with respect to employee inquiries, making regular consultation with a knowledgeable firm in addition to your company’s legal team critical. To help with these types of cases, Sarao maintains a team of legal advisors on staff but states “the companies that we work with have more than enough lawyers working on these issues, so we help tremendously by simply laying solid groundwork and letting the legal departments do their job…The bottom line is that there are tremendous risks in today’s business environment and our firm makes it a bit safer, letting the CEO’s sleep better at night.”
According to Sarao, the high-intensity stress levels that are a normal part of his projects don’t keep him up at night. In fact, he explains, he sleeps very well. “In this business,” concludes Sarao, “you can’t afford to get nervous – you would never survive.”
